Key Differences Between Synthetic Oil Vs. Conventional Oil

What you put into your car matters. Especially what you put into your engine. When you go get an oil change or if you change your oil yourself, there’s always a question on whether you should go with conventional or synthetic oil.

The main goal of an engine oil treatment is to reduce friction but also to ensure that your engine is working at its highest performance.

Here at BestLine Racing, we are all about educating our drivers and helping them understand exactly what they need to get the best performance and longest life out of their vehicles.

So let’s discuss the differences between synthetic oil and conventional oil

Synthetic Oil Vs. Conventional Oil: How It’s Made

The main difference between the two engine oil treatments is the way they are made and what they are made of.

Conventional Oil

Conventional oil, also called mineral oil, is a lubricant derivative of crude oil. Crude oil is extracted through underground wells, removed of some impurities, heated, cooled, refined, and blended with additives.

Think of conventional oil as a rock. It’s not uniform in shape, and there are still impurities that make it undesirable.

Synthetic Oil

Synthetic oil is a man-made substance that uses chemically modified materials and distilled crude oil.

Wait, so synthetic oil still contains crude oil? Yes.

However, the process of creating the oil is what makes all the difference.

Synthetic oils are created with higher quality base oils and are more chemically stable, allowing for improved performance of your engine.

Synthetic oil is like a marble, smooth, refined, and uniform. Compared to conventional oil, which is like a rock, which would you prefer?

Advantages Of Synthetic Oil

Because more advanced technology is involved, synthetic oil offers more for your engine than conventional oil.

Even though both types of engine oil treatments reduce friction, with synthetic oil, you get a few added benefits.

A few advantages of using synthetic oil are:

  • Less chance of oil breakdown
  • Reduction and prevention of sludge and deposit build-up
  • Protection against higher temperatures (conventional oil tends to break down in higher temps, i.e., when you need to run your car at its best.)
  • Better flow in lower temperatures (viscosity matters!)

Another advantage of synthetic oil is that you can go longer between oil changes. Conventional oil recommends you change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Closer to the 3,000 mark if you have a high-performance vehicle.

Synthetic oil can be changed up to 7,500+ miles depending on the type of car you have.
